UN salvage fleet begins task of clearing Suez canal

CAIRO, Dec. 28, 1956 (UP) -- The United Nations salvage fleet was reported at work clearing the Suez Canal today. Cairo newspapers said the move meant the Middle East crisis was nearing an end. U.S. Lieut. Gen. Raymond A. Wheeler, head of the salvage team, ordered his salvage vessels to start work at the southern end of the blocked waterway.

The job was expected to run into months.

India's roving ambassador, V.K. Krishna Menon, conferred in Cairo yesterday and today with President Gamal Abdel Nasser and was believed outlining the latest ideas of the United States and other nations for the future of the canal.

The talks were in preparation for a new effort to settle the manner at the next session of the United Nations which resumes early in January. Krishna Menon leaves today for New Delhi.

The redeployment of United Nations Emergency Forces (UNEF) from the Port Said area was in full swing with the departure yesterday of a Danish-Norwegian battalion of 650 men. The group was moving into the Sinai Desert behind the Israeli troops.
