The New York Post has learned the enforcement dilemma is another wrinkle in a rate hike already bogged down in confusion.

The state portion of the sales tax hike goes into effect Sunday while the city's portion kicks in on Wednesday.

As shopkeepers wrestle with what to charge customers all will pay more. The combined city and state sales tax will rise from 8.25 percent to 8.625 percent. It's expected to generate about $123 million over the next fiscal year.

FRESHMAN SHOULD PICK JOBS EARLY

Liberal arts major are finding it more difficult to pay off their loans, the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

The study's authors recommend those entering college pick the jobs they want and then pick a major to get that job.

A study by the Wichita State University in Kansas and the University of Memphis in Tennessee found

there are some majors that do not map into jobs that pay highly enough to support the debt that students are incurring.

For example, theater and communication majors earned the least after three years in the workplace -- barely $30,000 on average -- but racked up some of the biggest student loans, an average of $17,814.

Study author Steven A. Harrast an accounting professor at Wichita State, says, "It seems to be flying in the face of economic theory."

REALLY FRIENDLY SKIES

The friendly skies have gotten a whole lot friendlier over Chile. It's enough to drive someone completely Caracas.

An ad in Chile asks, "Would you like to fly the skies accompanied by two beautiful women and champagne, in a flight where all your fantasies are allowed?"

A club in Chile is offering erotic flights over the capital city Santiago, with champagne, tropical fruit and two sexy call girls thrown in to the bargain, the Web site Megastar reports.

Passengers have to pay $450 for a two-hour flight.
