U.N. Security Council to meet over Iran missile test

Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency session in New York on Tuesday in response to Iran's most recent medium-range ballistic missile test.

The meeting will take place at the request of the United States. Recently confirmed U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is expected to participate, Voice of America reported.

Iran is prohibited from all activities related to ballistic missiles designed to carry nuclear warheads due to a 2015 U.N. Security Council resolution.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday said he did not yet know the "exact nature" of the missile test. The medium-range missile flew about 600 miles out of a site near Semnan before it exploded.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif did not confirm or deny the test during a press conference in Tehran, though he said Iran's missiles are not designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action nuclear agreement between Iran and and several world powers, including the United States, does not have a provision barring Iran from conducting ballistic missile tests.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would discuss Iran when he meets U.S. President Donald Trump on Feb. 15.

"I will meet President Trump in Washington soon, and among the issues I will address, is the need to renew the sanctions against Iran," Netanyahu wrote on Facebook on Monday. "Sanctions against the ballistic missiles, and other sanctions against the terror, and re-addressing the failed agreement on its nuclear capabilities.

The Syrian civil war will also be discussed. U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura is expected to attend.
