KABUL, Afghanistan, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Taliban fighters stormed a guesthouse near the Spanish embassy in the Afghan capital Friday, launching car bombs and possible suicide attacks in the area.
Explosions and gunfire were heard in Kabul's affluent Sherpur area, the location of several embassies. At least two guards were killed and seven others were injured as a result of a car bomb near the gates of the Spanish embassy. Up to four insurgents were inside the building.
"We still do not know how many diplomats or guests might be holed up inside so we are conducting the clearing operation carefully as not to harm any civilians," Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying it was targeting a guesthouse used by "foreign invaders."
The attack follows the Taliban's 27-hour siege of Kandahar International Airport, the largest military installation in southern Afghanistan, on Tuesday. At least 10 Taliban suicide attackers killed 54 people.
