AL-HASAKAH, Syria, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- At least 10 people died, and 50 others were injured Monday in twin bombings in Syria's northeastern Hasakah province, local officials and human rights observers said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported an explosion at a Kurdish-operated checkpoint at the town of al-Hasakah, was followed by two suicide attacks with a bomb-laden vehicle on an outpost of pro-government troops near the train station in the provincial capital of Hasakah.

No group has claimed responsibility to the incidents.

Syria's SANA news agency reported up to 17 civilians were killed in the attacks.

A representative with Hasakah police told SANA women and children were among the victims.

Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi condemned the attacks, saying the bombings wouldn't staunch local support of the government's war against terrorist organizations.

The area was the site of a major Islamic State offensive, beginning in June, which included violent and sustained clashes with Kurdish fighters and the Syrian army. IS was driven from the province by July. The area has also seen airstrikes against IS by a U.S.-led coalition in recent weeks.
