KOBANE , Syria, June 27 (UPI) -- Kurdish forces have gained control of Syria's Kobane from the Islamic State after days of violent clashes, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Saturday.

The Islamic State's attack on the town, located on the border of Turkey, killed over 300 people, including women and children, during a surprise attack launched Thursday, Al Jazeera reports.

An activist told Al Jazeera IS fighters "knocked on doors claiming they were here to help, they spoke Kurdish, then barged into homes and shot everyone in front of them."

The militants reportedly disguised themselves in Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Free Army uniforms during the attacks.

"The situation is under control, we do not think the jihadists are hiding in the city anymore," Redur Xelil, a spokesman for the YPG told the Telegraph, adding that Kurdish fighters were sweeping the city to find any remaining militants.

According to Xelil, the fight was less about gaining control of the city for IS and more about remaining feared.

The fighting continues in the city of Hassakuh.
