MEXICO CITY, April 18 (UPI) -- A 7.5 magnitude earthquake shook southern and central Mexico on Friday morning.
There were no available reports of damage or injuries. Many Mexicans were not working Friday at the time of the earthquake, because the Friday during holy week leading up to the Christian celebration of Easter is observed as a holiday.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake began at 9:27 a.m. local time at its epicenter 37 kilometers north of Tecpan de Galeana in the state of Guerrero.
Guerrero is located north of Acapulco and southwest of Mexico City. Friday's earthquake was felt as far as Mexico City.
Mexico is, according to the USGS, "one of the world's most seismically active regions." An 8.1 magnitude earthquake in September 1985 killed more than 9,500 people in Mexico City.
