KIRAKIRA, Solomon Islands, April 13 (UPI) -- Two powerful earthquakes shook the Pacific Ocean near the Solomon Islands on Sunday morning.
The first quake, at 7:14 a.m. local time, was a 7.6-magnitude. The second, at 11:36 p.m., was a 7.4-magnitude.
The earlier earthquake's epicenter was located at a depth of 18.2 miles, about 62 miles south-southeast of Kirakira on the Solomon Islands. The second was located at a depth of 21.7 miles about 69 miles south of Kirakira.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Papa New Guinea.
[USGS] [Time]“An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicenter within minutes to hours,” the center warned.
