India is now Facebook's second-largest market after the United States.

NEW DELHI, April 9 (UPI) -- Facebook users in India reached the 100 million mark, the company said Wednesday, now its second-largest market after the United States.

The social networking business has had India in its plans to make it the world’s largest market in terms of users. The fast pace of growth in mobile and data services in India made the target easier; nearly 84 percent of Facebook users in India access Facebook on mobile devices.

“We’ve only just begun. Facebook’s mission is to give people the power to share,” said Facebook India’s Kevin D’Souza, noting a partnership, internet.org, with the aim of connecting five billion people around the world.

“India is an exciting market for us because we are at the start of the data boom. We have found that the primary reason for Indians to subscribe to data is to get on Facebook,” said Facebook Vice President Vaughan Smith.

A challenge for the company, though, is to grow its advertising revenue in line with the user growth.

“When we started in India four years ago, people asked whether someone really advertised on our platform. Now marketers use Facebook as a strong platform,” said Kirthiga Reddy, head of Facebook India.
