German town strips Hitler of citizenship after first vote failed

DIETRAMSZELL, Germany, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A German council has voted to strip Adolf Hitler of his honorary citizenship after a similar measure failed to pass last week, town officials said.

The Dietramszell town council received international criticism when the members deadlocked on the motion Dec. 10.

Eight members voted against the motion and the other eight voted for it, TheLocal.de reported.

In a special meeting Wednesday, the council came to an agreement and unanimously passed the measure to strip Hitler of the honor.

"It was never our intention to trivialize the crimes of Adolf Hitler. We underestimated that our voting behavior could be understood in such a way," the council said.

The motion came up for a vote after an archivist discovered Hitler's honorary citizenship, which was bestowed in 1933.

The mayor led the vote, which was expected to be a formality.
