Egyptians to vote on new constitution

CAIRO, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Egyptians will soon vote on a new constitution to replace the one written during the presidency of Mohamed Morsi, interim President Adly Mansour said Saturday.

Voting on the rewritten constitution is scheduled for two days starting Jan. 14, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The interim government has said that ratifying a new constitution is a crucial step toward restoring democracy in Egypt. Presidential and parliamentary elections are also scheduled for next year.

While announcing the referendum, Mansour called on all those opposed the current political settlement to "give up on their stubbornness," Ahram Online reported.

"Let this constitution be a word of justice, that unites and doesn't separate ... for hatred is a tool for destruction ... disagreement is legislated, as long it adopts peacefulness and is in the country's interest," Mansour said Saturday.
