29 students to go to court in Cairo over clashes

CAIRO, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Twenty-nine pro-Muslim Brotherhood students will stand trial in Cairo on charges of committing acts of violence and sabotage, Egyptian officials said.

Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat referred the students to the Cairo Criminal Court for the charges for an incident at Al-Azhar University October 30, the Egypt Independent reported Thursday.

Students clashed with security forces at Al-Azhar University following the arrest of Freedom and Justice Party Deputy Leader Essam el-Arian. The school was heavily damaged and more than 20 students were arrested.

The students also are charged with breaking into the university's administrative building, assembly for the purpose of influencing authorities and disrupting law, the possession knives and thuggery.

They were ordered held pending trial.
