CHANDIGARH, India, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- An Indian couple who recently eloped against their families' wishes were killed by the woman's family in India's northern Haryana state, officials said.
Nidhi Barak, 20, and Dharmender Barak, 23, both of whom belonged to the influential Jat community of Haryana's Rohtak district, eloped Tuesday and contacted local villagers to raise funds for a wedding, Gulf News reported.
However, the news of the elopement got back to the woman's family. The couple was tricked into getting into a car, thinking it would take them to a wedding ceremony for them, but instead it brought them to Barak's home, where she was lit on fire and he was beheaded after having his arms and legs broken, the report said.
When police arrived at the scene of the so-called honor killing, they filed complaints against six people and arrested Nidhi Barak's father and uncle.
Gulf News said honor killings are common in the Jat-dominated Haryana state, where they are rarely policed because local governments see them as a social problem and not a law and order problem. Most honor killings involve families from different castes/
