More than 500 migrants rescued off Sicilian coast

ROME, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- More than 500 migrants were rescued off the Sicilian coast Tuesday after one of the migrants' three boats fell apart at sea, officials said.

The Italian Coast Guard took some of the 233 people to the island of Lampedusa and 335 migrants were saved off the coast of Agrigento, ANSA reported.

The migrants were identified as Eritrean, Pakistani and Syrian nationals, who told rescuers they were at sea for about 10 days, officials said. Women and children were among the migrants.
