At least six migrants found dead after shipwreck in southern Italy

CATANIA, Italy, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The bodies of six people believed to be immigrants were found Saturday on a beach in southern Italy after a shipwreck, officials said.

The boat was carrying about 120 migrants when it ran aground about 50 feet offshore of the Sicilian port of Catania, the BBC reported.

Port officials said dozen of passengers were rescued.

The United Nations says about 500 people were reported dead or missing at sea in attempts to reach Europe in 2012. Some 7,800 illegal migrants and asylum seekers landed in Italy in the first half of 2013.
