ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, May 24 (UPI) -- Security talks and celebrating the African Union's 50th anniversary were on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's agenda on a trip to Ethiopia.

The State Department said Kerry's three-day visit, beginning Friday in Addis Ababa, would include meetings with senior Ethiopian officials, Voice of America reported.

Discussions were expected to include efforts to battle Islamic extremists in countries such as Mali and northern Nigeria, the State Department said.

On Saturday, Kerry will join African leaders and other dignitaries at an African Union summit to celebrate 50 years of the pan-African organization.
