Nigerian hospital closed after alleged police assaults

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, May 11 (UPI) -- A hospital in Nigeria was closed down Saturday after a clash between police officers and facility staff over an overcrowded morgue, doctors said.

Physicians at the main hospital in Maiduguri said police assaulted staff members and even patients after they learned the morgue had no room for the bodies of fellow officers killed in fighting with Islamic militants.

One doctor told the BBC the hospital would remain closed until the Nigerian government established better security.

The slain police officers were among 55 people killed in a raid by suspected Boko Haram guerrillas on a town outside Maiduguri. Maiduguri is the capital of Borno state, which has been a hotbed of Boko Haram activity since 2010, CNN said.
