KAZBEGI, Georgia, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- An avalanche that occurred in Georgia's Kazbegi mountains Thursday killed three Russian mountain climbers, officials said.

A child who was part of the group survived the avalanche, RIA Novosti reported.

"The climbers went on a climb on January 2 and stayed up in the mountains until today. They were hit by an avalanche early this morning," said Shalva Yeloshvili, the head of the Kazbegi municipality.

Efforts to retrieve the bodies have been hindered by bad weather, the Russian news agency said.
