Italian mob boss found in bunker

MARINA DI GIOIOSA JONICA, Italy, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Italian police arrested an alleged 'Ndrangheta mafia boss after finding him hiding out in a bunker in his mother's house, officials said.

Giuseppe Aquino, 50, was arrested Tuesday in the town of Marina di Gioiosa Jonica in Reggio Calabria province, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Police said Aquino is believed to be one of the leaders of the 'Ndrangheta group and has been on the run for about two years.

From his basement bunker, which was accessible through a trap door, Aquino continued to manage his gang, as well as a variety of businesses, including hotels, public services and construction, Reggio Calabria Deputy Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri said.

Those businesses served as legitimate operations to launder the proceeds from international trafficking in drugs, authorities said.
