Regional Mayor Raul Celis told CNN a 72-year-old man died of a heart attack during an evacuation following the quake.

No tsunami warning was issued by Chile's Hydrographic and Oceanic Service.

A Canadian delegation in Santiago for Prime Minister Stephen Harper's visit was reported unhurt.

The quake occurred in the same area as an 8.8 magnitude quake in February 2010 that killed hundreds of people.

Chile is in the Pacific Basin's so-called "Ring of Fire," prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanoes.
