TOKYO, March 4 (UPI) -- The emperor of Japan was home Sunday recovering from heart bypass surgery, the palace announced.
Emperor Akihito, 78, moved slowly as he left the University of Tokyo Hospital Sunday in the company of Empress Michiko, but smiled as he accepted a bouquet from the staff, the Kyodo news service said.

Akihito underwent surgery for angina on Feb. 18 and then took part in a cardiac rehabilitation program at the hospital, which involved stair-walking and other exercises.
Crown Prince Naruhito performed the emperor's official duties during his hospitalization.
