TOKYO, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Japanese Emperor Akihito, who underwent heart bypass surgery, was moved Monday from University of Tokyo Hospital ICU to a private room, sources told Kyodo News.

Quoting sources at the Imperial Household Agency, Kyodo News agency said the 78-year-old emperor had a light meal after being moved out of the intensive care unit to begin his post-operative rehabilitation.

The report said the emperor, whose surgery was performed Saturday, met his wife, Empress Michiko, in front of the private room around 11 a.m. The surgery reportedly was a success.

The highly revered emperor ascended the throne in 1989 after the death of his father, Emperor Hirohito.

Crown Prince Naruhito has been performing official duties during Akihito's hospitalization.

Last November, the emperor was hospitalized for treatment of bronchial pneumonia. He and Empress Michiko have three children.
