NADI, Fiji, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Severe flooding in Fiji has left six people dead, including four members of a family killed in a landslide, and displaced some 3,500 people, authorities said.
A state of disaster has been declared in Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Sigatoka and Rakiraki in the western parts of Fiji's biggest island, Viti Levu, where the flooding is most severe, the BBC reported.
The family -- local media reported a husband, his wife and their two daughters -- had been trapped inside their home by the landslide in Ba, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
A farmer on Viti Levu and another farmer on the island Vanua Levu were also killed.
Rains, which began last weekend, have flooded roads and disrupted water and power supplies to some communities.
At least 3,500 people were in temporary shelters, the BBC said.
New Zealand has pledged $286,000 in flood aid to the Fiji Red Cross.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said flood waters appear to have peaked and had begun falling in parts of western Viti Levu but more rain is forecast in coming days.
Sharon Smith-Johns, secretary for information, said the Nadi airport remained open, and hotels in Denarau were open but some guests had to enter and exit the area by helicopter.
