Soggy Houston braces for overnight rain

HOUSTON, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Weather forecasters said more rain was likely in the Houston area where a deluge Monday trapped dozens of people on the city's southeast side.

The National Weather Service said Monday night more showers and thunderstorms were heading across Texas toward the Gulf Coast and could produce 1-4 inches of rain that could cause additional flooding in low-lying areas.

Classes at one elementary school in Houston were canceled for Tuesday and dump trucks were used to drive people to safety along flooded streets.

"It was muddy and dirty and we had to change our shoes," Kassede Tate, 14, a student at KIPP Academy told the Houston Chronicle after her first ride in the back of a dump truck. "And I don't plan to do it again."

Assistant Fire Chief Lisa Campbell told the Chronicle as many as 40 people were evacuated from an apartment complex and the fire department received about 100 calls from people calling for help due to rising waters.
