JERUSALEM, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Israeli Foreign Minister Rafi Barak summoned the Egyptian ambassador Friday to discuss relations between the two countries, an official said.
Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing sources in the Foreign Ministry, said Barak wanted the ambassador to clarify the interim Egyptian prime minister's call for changes in the 1979 treaty. Last week, protesters in Cairo, angry about the killing of five Egyptian security officers in the Sinai, stormed the Israeli Embassy.
The treaty signed by Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin has remained in force through changes of government in both countries. After President Hosni Mubarak was ousted earlier this year, the interim military government said it would maintain the status quo.
Public opinion in Egypt appears to have swung against Israel even before the Sinai incident. The five officers were shot by Israeli forces pursuing suspected terrorists.
