Tel Aviv man finds military case in trash

TEL AVIV, Israel, July 12 (UPI) -- A confidential case that appears to belong to former Israeli airman Yonatan Shapira was found in a Ramat Gan garbage, a Tel Aviv resident said.

The 37-year-old man told Israel's Ynetnews.com he discovered the case containing a notebook with "Secret" written across it and a pilot's helmet belonging to a "Yonatan S" when he threw out some trash.

He said he handed everything he found over to Tel Aviv District police who confirmed receipt of the equipment and said it was passed on to the military.

Shapira, one of the signatories of the 2003 refusnik pilots' letter, is an activist who speaks out against Israeli military operations in the settlements.

He is currently in the United States and told Ynetnews the whole story sounds bizarre.

"I haven't been in the army for over eight years and I think the objects discovered have nothing to do with me," he said.
