Knox again vows innocence at hearing

PERUGIA, Italy, May 21 (UPI) -- Addressing an Italian court Saturday, American student Amanda Knox tearfully again proclaimed her innocence of her roommate's killing.

Knox, 23, made her brief statement at the end of her latest appeal hearing in Perugia, where British student Meredith Kercher was found with her throat cut Nov. 1, 2007.

The hearing gave experts another six weeks to study contested DNA evidence and means a verdict is unlikely before fall, The Daily Telegraph reported. The court also granted a defense request to present new witnesses.

''I am innocent and have been in jail for more than three and a half years," said Knox. "It is very frustrating and mentally exhausting for me. There is nothing more important that finding the truth for all the errors that have been made. … The most important thing is that I do not want to stay in jail unjustifiably for all my life.''

The Seattle native and her Italian co-defendant and boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 26 and 25 years in prison respectively.
