New pact to strengthen Chile and Peru ties

LIMA, April 18 (UPI) -- Peru's ambassador to Chile said the Pacific agreement to be signed later this month in Lima will strengthen his country's relations with Chile.

Carlos Pareja, Peru's ambassador to Chile, said Peru and Chile's trade pact with Mexico and Colombia will allow for a greater capital, goods and services between the two countries, La Republica reported.

"The idea of bringing [the countries] together in a trading bloc seeks to promote new markets in the Pacific Rim," said Pareja.

The agreement that could lead to the creation of a trade and development accord between the countries was signed by the presidents of the countries in December at the Union of South American Nations summit in Argentina.

The ambassador added that the pact will enhance trade and investment ties with the member countries of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Chile's Sebastian Pinera, Colombia's Juan Manuel Santos and Alan Garcia of Peru will visit Peru on April 28 to seal the trade and development accord between the countries.
