NAPLES, Italy, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- The Italian seaport of Naples remains littered with trash months after Premier Silvio Berlusconi visited the city and promised to clean it up, officials said.

Berlusconi was in Naples last fall and vowed to have the garbage cleaned up within three days but there has been little progress, ANSA reported Monday.

Officials estimated about 2,000 tons of garbage was on streets during Berlusconi's visit. About 1,800 tons of garbage remains, they said.

"I believe we must find a solution in the coming hours to prevent the amount of uncollected refuse growing," said Urban Hygiene councilor Paolo Giacomelli.

Officials said opposition to new dumps has contributed to a slowdown in refuse collection.
