PALM BAY, Fla., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Officials in Palm Bay, Fla., said sanitation workers may begin repossessing trash bins from residents who haven't paid their bills.

Nearly 3,000 residents had not paid quarterly bills, each amounting to about $33, and trash collectors may begin removing their bins after emptying them, WFTV, Orlando, Fla., reported Friday.

Officials said the delinquent accounts could be a result of confusion from the city's automated garbage program, which began five months ago.

"I think the quarterly customers aren't used to receiving a bill from the city. They used to get them from Waste Management," city representative Yvonne Martinez said.

Waste Management is a private waste removal company.

The city said its automated calling system is being used to warn residents of the trash can repossessions.
