NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A court in Myanmar has upheld the dissolution of the pro-democracy National League for Democracy party led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
The court said the NLD is an unlawful organization because it refused to register for November's election, the BBC reported.
NLD officials said the ruling came as no surprise and the party's attorney said there is no way to appeal it.
The new Parliament in the country formerly known as Burma will have a large military presence and convenes for the first time next week.
Myanmar's previous elections, in 1990, were handily won by the NLD but it was prevented from taking power by the military junta.
The NLD refused to re-register to take part in November's election, saying rules set by the junta were unfair and not democratic. The election was considered a sham by many Western nations.
Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991. She was held under house arrest for 15 of the 21 years following the 1990 elections. She was freed from confinement in November.
