Iceland irked by U.S. WikiLeaks probe

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Officials in Iceland are objecting to a request from the United States for information on Birgitta Jonsdottir, who has ties to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Twitter announced late last week it had received court permission to disclose that Washington was seeking information on certain individuals, including Jonsdottir, a member of Iceland's Parliament.

The EU Observer said Tuesday Iceland's foreign minister reacted to the subpoena by summoning the U.S. ambassador to get an explanation of Washington's intentions.

"According to the documents that I have seen, an Icelandic parliamentarian is being investigated in a criminal case in the United States for no reason at all," Foreign Minister Oessur Skarphedinsson said on Icelandic radio.

Jonsdottir and Assange were co-authors of the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative. She issued a statement on Twitter Monday saying she would fight the subpoena.
