JERUSALEM, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- Yitzhak Rabin's assassin wants to get out of solitary confinement but opposes having another prisoner put in his cell, his lawyer told Israel's Supreme Court.
Yigal Amir is serving a life sentence for shooting the prime minister in November 1995 and has been in solitary for 15 years.
His petition said, "I am interested in integrating into the ultra-Orthodox wing so that I will be able to pray and be in the company of other people," The Jerusalem Post reported.
The prison service is opposing Amir's appeal, fearing he would spread his extremist ideas in the prison population and could be in danger from other inmates.
In his response read by his lawyer Monday, he stated, "I have no intention of indoctrinating others. What I did was a one-time thing."
The State Attorney's Office said it would not oppose adding a prisoner to Amir's cell, Haaretz reported. But the lawyer said Amir rejected that idea.
Amir's wife, Larissa Trimbobler, said before the hearing that "conditions which Amir is being held in are considered torture in other places of the world. The state wants to torture him."
