Mugabe aide counters attack by premier

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A lieutenant of President Robert Mugabe has struck back at Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in a spat over power-sharing in Zimbabwe.

The prime minister is accusing the president of violating the constitution and their 2009 power-sharing deal, but Jonathan Moyo, a member of the central committee of Mugabe's ZANU-PF party, told the BBC Tsvangirai was "desperate" and just "making noise."

At a news conference in Harare Thursday, Tsvangirai said: "I have defended President Robert Mugabe at my own cost politically. But neither I nor the MDC can stand back any longer and just allow President Mugabe and the ZANU-PF to defy the law, to flaunt the constitution, and to act as if they own this country."

Tsvangirai vowed his Movement for Democratic Change would not recognize appointments made by Mugabe in the past 18 months, including governors, judges and envoys, saying they had been named unilaterally.

But Moyo said it is still up to the president to appoint governors, and Tsvangirai was under pressure from followers who want government jobs.

Moyo also said the unity government had delivered on "bread and butter" issues. Elections are due next year.
