MP wants to make buying sex illegal

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- A Conservative member of Canada's Parliament said Wednesday it will take the entire nation to stop the modern-day slave trade.

MP Joy Smith unveiled dozens of recommendations on how to fight human trafficking including one to make buying sex illegal, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

Canada prohibits solicitation for sex but not the actual purchase of sex.

Some 32 human trafficking cases are currently before Canadian courts, including 14 that involve girls under the age of 18.

The plan Smith has worked on for the past three years calls for Canada to follow Sweden in treating prostitution as violence against sex trade workers and the purchase of sex illegal, the Free Press said.

"Personally, I like the Swedish model and we can adapt many concepts from that model concerning the demand for the sex trade," Smith said.

Smith says her plan has been given to the prime minister and she hopes it will be presented to Parliament in full.
