Nov. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Rand Paul said he sustained six broken ribs and pleural effusion in what's described as an attack by his neighbor.

Paul provided a update to his medical status Wednesday on Twitter, saying he had broken six ribs and X-rays revealed fluids had begun to build up between his chest and lungs.

"I appreciate all of the support from everyone. A medical update: final report indicates six broken ribs & new X-ray shows a pleural effusion," the Kentucky senator said.

Doug Stafford, a senior adviser, previously said Paul had sustained five broken ribs, including three displaced fractures.

The Republican senator has been recovering at his home in Bowling Green.

Paul's neighbor, 59-year-old Rene Boucher, was arrested and charged with one count of fourth-degree assault after he attacked Paul from behind while the senator was mowing his lawn on Friday, Kentucky police said.
