April 19 (UPI) -- Two people died in the crash of a single-engine private plane in East Windsor, Conn., police said.

The Luscombe 8A plane crashed at the end of a runway as it took off Tuesday afternoon from the privately owned Skylark Airport in East Windsor. It was found in a wooded area on private property, and narrowly missed striking homes in the area. The plane was largely intact when it was found, with its nose down and tail up, and authorities said they were able to identify the plane's registration.

Witnesses said they heard the plane's engine stall before the accident. Officials said there was no evidence of a fire or fuel leak at the scene of the crash.

Information about the plane, and the identities of the pilot and passenger, were not revealed, but a friend of the pilot, Dan Frederick, said the pilot had his flying license for at least 15 years.

"It's devastating," Frederick said. "I knew these people personally."

The Federal Aviation Administration investigators responded to the scene of the crash, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected Wednesday.
