HOUSTON, June 17 (UPI) -- A 3-year-old boy died Thursday after wandering into a car in search of his toy and was then unable to get out, Houston authorities said.

As temperatures neared 100 degrees in the coastal Texas city, the boy climbed into the back seat of a car near a house to get one of his toys. Once he got in, he was unable to get out because of the child protective locks, said Kese Smith, spokesperson for the Houston Police Department.

About 30 to 45 minutes after he was last seen, family members found the boy in cardiac arrest. A family member performed CPR and the boy was rushed to Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital, where he died, the Houston Fire Department said.

Detectives said an investigation is ongoing but charges won't likely be filed. Child protective services has been notified as a matter of procedure, but authorities are considering the death of the boy identified as Evan Trapolino, an accident. He was the youngest of four children.
