WASHINGTON, June 8 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren plans to endorse Hillary Clinton for president amid speculation she could find herself in the Democratic ticket's vice presidential slot.

Warren, a leader among liberals nationally, had pointedly declined to endorse either Clinton or her more liberal challenger, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, during the campaign, making Warren the only female Democratic senator not to line up behind Clinton.

Her likely endorsement will comes not long after Clinton secured the delegates necessary to claim the Democratic nomination -- although Sanders has still not left the race and remains steadfast in his claim to continue fighting until the Democratic convention next month.

Warren's name has surfaced previously as a potential running mate for either Clinton or Sanders, given her immense popularity among the party's liberal base -- voters Clinton needs to win over after a sometimes bumpy campaign against Sanders.

Clinton declined to speculate on names during a CNN interview Wednesday, but said her campaign was evaluating all options for the best possible running mate and vice president -- a list that, "of course," will include women.

Warren earned herself one prominent backer for a spot on the Democratic ticket: Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who is said to be pushing for the Massachusetts congresswoman behind the scenes.
