St. Louis police search for man who killed 8-month-old son

By Shawn Price

ST. LOUIS, May 25 (UPI) -- A manhunt is on for a father who on Tuesday shot and killed his 8-month-old son in an argument with his wife, then fled with his two other sons, police said.

Diata R. Crockett, 34, later left the two sons unharmed and disappeared in a rented black Hyundai Sonata. The car was also recovered later. Police consider Crockett -- who has a long criminal record including assault, burglary and drug possession -- armed and dangerous.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Sam Dotson told reporters Crockett forced his wife into the rental car at gunpoint, with the two older sons in the car and the infant being held by his mother.

As Crockett stopped at stop sign, the woman jumped out of the car, Dotson said. Crockett then fired at his wife, but shot the infant instead. The child later died at the hospital.

According to an 11-minute call to 911, the driver who picked up Crockett's wife and infant to take them to the hospital, told the dispatcher Crockett was "trying to run us off the road."

"I really have to question the humanity of this individual," Dotson said.
