WASHINGTON, April 12 (UPI) -- Windstorms and hail caused significant damage to homes and vehicles in Texas, while dangerous driving conditions killed at least one person in Arkansas.

Andrea D. Pense, 22, died while driving on U.S. Route 71 in Arkansas when she lost control of her car during wet conditions and crashed into trees Monday morning. The storm also brought frequent lightning that ignited at least two large fires. No injuries were reported in the fires.

The weather also rained down large hail on parts of Texas, which reportedly caused injuries. Witnesses described some hail as large as softballs. The school district in the city of Wylie canceled classes in all campuses on Tuesday after damage from falling hail.

The National Weather Service warned the severe weather is expected to continue to threaten the South through Tuesday.

"Severe thunderstorms, with large hail, damaging winds and an isolated tornado will continue across parts of northeast Texas, southern Oklahoma and the lower Mississippi Valley. Heavy rain is also possible across the western Gulf Coast, lower Mississippi Valley and Tennessee Valley," the NWS said in a statement, also warning of isolated severe storms in parts of the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas Tuesday night.
