New Jersey newspapers call for Chris Christie to resign

TRENTON, N.J., March 1 (UPI) -- Six New Jersey newspapers called on Gov. Chris Christie to resign in a joint editorial published on the day of the Super Tuesday primaries.

The newspapers, all owned by conglomerate Gannett, slammed Christie for abandoning his state when he endorsed Donald Trump for president shortly after Christie ended his own failed presidential bid.

"We're fed up with Gov. Chris Christie's arrogance," the editorial said. "We're fed up with his long neglect of the state to pursue his own selfish agenda."

Christie backed the real estate mogul and reality TV star after Christie dropped out following his loss in New Hampshire Feb. 10. Christie spoke at a press event at Trump's Palm Beach mansion Tuesday night, calling him "tough and strong and bold."

"We're disgusted with his endorsement of Donald Trump after he spent months on the campaign trail trashing him, calling him unqualified by temperament and experience to be president," the editorial read.

Christie refused to answer questions during a press conference on his nomination of a state Supreme Court judge on Monday. When asked why he wasn't taking questions, Christie said "Because I don't want to."

The editorial, published in papers including the Asbury Park Press, the Cherry Hill Courier-Post and the Morristown Daily Record, blasted the governor for spending 261 days out of state in his failed campaign last year and his continuing absence as part of his endorsement for Trump.

"For the good of the state, it's time for Christie to do his long-neglected constituents a favor and resign as governor. If he refuses, citizens should initiate a recall effort," the editorial said.
