Twitter brings back government accountability tool Politwoops

By Ann Marie Awad

NEW YORK, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Twitter reached an agreement with government accountability groups to revive a service that allows users to see politicians' deleted tweets.

The service -- called Politiwoops -- is a product of The Sunlight Foundation and The Open State Foundation, two government transparency groups. It was effectively shut down in June when Twitter revoked access to their API. Twitter told Gawker in June that preserving deleted tweets violated Twitter's developer agreement.

Twitter released a statement Thursday announcing an agreement with the two groups that would allow the service to continue: "We look forward to continuing our work with these important organizations, and using Twitter to bring more transparency to public dialogue."

"This agreement is great news for those who believe that the world needs more transparency," said Arjan El Fassed, director of the OpenState foundation. "Our next step is now to continue and expand our work to enable the public to hold public officials accountable for their public statements."

Politiwoops was launched in 2010 in more than 30 countries.
