HAMILTON, Ohio, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A Hamilton, Ohio, firefighter died early Monday after falling through the floor of a burning house, the fire chief said.

Chief Steve Dawson confirmed the firefighter died after the department received reports a person was trapped in a burning building in the southwest Ohio community.

The reports of a trapped victim were later proven false.

"We've had a tragedy here in Hamilton this morning," Dawson said. "The firefighters arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the structure. They proceeded to make entry into the structure, and once inside, one of the firefighters fell through the first floor into the basement."

The firefighter was taken to a local hospital, then airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he died. His name has not been revealed.

The owner of the home said his elderly parents, who live there, were vacationing at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
