PHOENIX, June 29 (UPI) -- Power has been restored to thousands of people and cleanup efforts are underway after the first monsoon storm of the season hit Phoenix with a dust storm.

More than 15,000 customers were out of power at one point when the storm began Saturday. A dust storm warning was in effect for the greater Phoenix area until 9 p.m. Sunday. Winds of more than 40 mph affected the greater Phoenix area.

Thousands of people were facing temperatures of more than 100 degrees without electricity or air conditioning. Strong winds and the dust storm also forced the closure of roads.

Temperatures are expected to remain high during the week, but chances for precipitation are low and wind is expected to be about 10 mph or less.

The National Weather Services and the Arizona Department of Transportation advise motorists to pull off to the side of the road if a dust storm forms while driving. Sandstorms are caused by strong winds in arid or semi-arid regions.
