Two convicted murderers escape from maximum-security prison

DANNEMORA, N.Y., June 6 (UPI) -- Two convicted murderers have escaped from a maximum-security prison near the borders of Canada and Vermont, authorities said Saturday.

Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, are said to have broken out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora overnight and are considered extremely dangerous. If spotted, they should not be approached.

WPTZ reports that state troopers describe Matt as caucasian, 6 feet tall, 210 pounds with black hair and hazel eyes. He has a tattoo that reads "Mexico Forever" on his back and a marine corps insignia on his right shoulder.

Sweat is described as caucasian, 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and 165 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. Authorities say he has tattoos on his left arm and right fingers.

Vanessa Misciagna of WPTZ reports that officers are completing road checks and searching in the surrounding woods. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to arrive in the city to conduct a press conference Saturday evening.
