WASHINGTON, June 1 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old intern was arrested Monday for bringing an unloaded gun to the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill.

A spokeswoman for Capitol Hill Police said officers arrested Joshua Wheeler, of Atchison, Kansas, when they found him with an unloaded Smith and Wesson 9-millimeter handgun during a routine search when he entered the building.

Wheeler, who works for Rep. Lynn Jenkins, R-Kan, was charged with carrying a pistol without a license and carrying an unregistered firearm.

A spokesman for Jenkins described the incident as an "accident."

"Mr. Wheeler used poor judgement and was immediately placed on temporary leave as soon as we were informed of the arrest," he said.
