SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., May 17 (UPI) -- A Catholic priest says he was fired from Seton Hall University because he supported LGBT rights in a Facebook post.

Rev. Warren Hall, who served as the school's director of Campus Ministry, wrote Friday on Twitter that the school fired him for supporting the NOH8 Campaign.

"I've been fired from SHU for posting a pic on FB supporting LGBT 'NO H8.' I'm sorry it was met with this response. I'll miss my work here," Hall wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

Seton Hall tweeted Sunday that the school "does not comment on personnel issues" and said in a statement that the director of Campus Ministry serves at the discretion of the Archdiocese of Newark.

Seton Hall University, based in South Orange, N.J., is a private Roman Catholic university founded in 1856.

More than 3,000 people have signed a Change.org petition calling for the school to reinstate Hall.

"This action is not in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ, nor is it line with the words of Pope Francis, current leader of the Roman Catholic Church," the petition said.

Hall wrote on Twitter Sunday that he was "grateful for all the support."

"Dont be angry!! Turn this into an opportunity for open/reasonable discussion on LGBT issues on a Cath Campus," Hall said.
