LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 17 (UPI) -- A 7-year-old girl was dragged over 1,000 feet after being caught in the door of her school bus, according to witnesses and police.

Video footage of the Friday incident shows the girl being pulled down the road after her backpack was snagged in the door of a school bus from Wilkerson Elementary School in Louisville, Ky.

The bus driver "should have watched the girl walk up the driveway before she pulled off," Brian Burlison, the girl's baby sitter, told WLKY.

A driver in a red Camaro can be seen in the video speeding to the front of the bus to warn the driver.

Neighbor Tom Carman, whose surveillance camera captured footage of the incident, told WLKY if that had not occurred, "the bus driver may have just kept going."

The girl was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Witness Esther Karschner said one of her legs had "hardly any skin left."

"Her shoes was off; her pants got ripped off. It was just horrible to see her like that on the ground," Burlison told WLKY.

"When I first saw it on my camera I thought, 'Oh my gosh,' " Carmen said. "How can a bus driver not pay attention to the children around him, right outside of his own door, and it is made of clear glass?"

The bus driver was reported to have been visibly distraught over the incident.

Police are investigating.
