Officers pull woman from burning car moments before it explodes

Police say the accident would have been fatal if a person not tipped police off about an erratic driver in the area.

KINNELON, N.J., April 19 (UPI) -- New Jersey police officers rescued a woman from a burning vehicle in an incident on Thursday evening that almost proved fatal.

Dash camera footage shows officers from Kinnelon, N.J., speed to the scene of an accident and rush toward a 2006 Toyota Solara convertible that had flipped over near the roadside.

Smoke seeped from the vehicle's undercarriage and the horn was stuck blasting as Officer Mark Ehrenberg and Officer Ricky Ferriola tried to get the attention of the unconscious occupant, who was identified as 45-year-old Dawn Milosky, of Beachwood, N.J.

After realizing she was unresponsive, the two cut her seat belt away, pulled her from the wreckage and dragged her limp body across the road. Moments later flames engulfed the car and a small explosion blew off the back of the vehicle.

An officer performed CPR on Milosky, and she was hooked to a defibrillator before being airlifted to Morristown Medical Center. Police said she was in good condition, but she was charged with driving while intoxicated, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, reckless driving and failure to stay in the right lane.

Police credited Ehrenberg and Ferriola for their quick response but also commended a passerby who, minutes before the incident, tipped off police about an erratic driver who was swerving around in the area.

Sgt. Chris Carbone told WPIX that were it not for "citizen interaction by calling the police about an erratic driver ... it would have been a fatal motor vehicle accident."
